Interview Tips! for IVY Students

In ​admission interviews​ for international schools, a student’s academic potential is not the only thing examined; their adaptability, communication skills, and ability to function in a diverse setting are also considered.

Among all the admission exams, the interview is, without any doubt, the most challenging one. The student is face-to-face with an interviewer, usually a teacher from their dream school, who will judge every small aspect of them, from their skills to their composure.

However, this obstacle can be overcome. As with everything, there are a few tips a student can follow to succeed.

Today I want to talk about some common mistakes and misconceptions students have when preparing for or participating in an interview.

A sentence that I always stress to all my students is: "Practice, but do not over-memorize." Memorizing all the answers by heart can be counterproductive because students might get nervous if they do not remember what to say or sound too robotic while repeating what they studied.

​

Thinking before speaking is another important tip I always encourage my students to follow. Taking a few seconds to gather their thoughts helps them give clear answers and demonstrate maturity and confidence.

​

First impressions and greetings are important! Students should present their best selves by dressing appropriately and greeting interviewers politely. They should show up at the interview in an appropriate outfit, greet the interviewers properly, and always sit up straight.

Eye contact is fundamental to show confidence and respect to the interviewer. When maintaining eye contact, a person appears sure of themselves and their abilities and tells the interviewer that they are engaged in the conversation and value what the interviewers are saying.

Speaking in clear, well-structured sentences is essential, as it helps students sound confident, intelligent, and articulate. Students should always avoid filler words, such as "uhm," "like," or "you know" because they can make it seem like the student is unsure of what they are saying. Instead, they should take a ​short pause.

​

Finally, a student should always prepare thoughtful questions to ask before the end of the interview. This is the perfect chance to stand out and show that they are truly interested in the school. However, they should avoid asking questions that are easily answered on the school's website.
